Genetic tests
ProHerper is able to offer genetic tests on ball pythons to test the genetics. This means you can now test if a possible het is a 100% het!
Which tests are available?
The Pied test checks whether your animals are 100% het Pied or not. If you have an animal and you're not sure if it is a visual Pied, you can also test this.
The Albino test check if your animal is 100% het Albino, 100% het Candy or 100% het Toffee. The test can also check if your animals is a Candy, Candino or Albino (or Toffee, Toffino and Albino). There are two lines of Albino and only one can be tested (the one that can be tested is rare in Europe).
The Lavender albino test checks whether your animals are 100% het Lavender albino or not.
The Ultramel test checks whether your animals are 100% het Ultramel or not. If you have an animal and you're not sure if it is a visual Ultramel, you can also test this. There are two lines of Ultramel and only one can be tested (the one that cannot be tested is rare in Europe).
The Yellow belly complex test is made up of several tests
- Yb & Specter
- Spark & Gravel
- Asphalt
Each line represents a separate test.
The Hypo (= Orange Ghost) test checks whether your animals are 100% het Hypo or not. If you have an animal and you're not sure if it is a visual Hypo, you can also test this.
The Clown - Cryptic test checks whether your animals are 100% het Clown, 100 Cryptic or not het for any of them. This test can also check if your animal is cryptic or crypton or to check if your animal is visual Clown or Cryptic (for example when you hatched a BEL).
The Hurricane/Trick test checks if your animal is Hurricane/Trick or not. The test can also be used to check if it is a super or a regular Hurricane/Trick. The test cannot differentiate between Hurricane and Trick because they are the same genetically.
The Genetic stripe test checks whether your animals are 100% het Genetic stripe or not. This test can also check if your animal visual Genetic stripe or not.
The VPI Axanthic test checks whether your animals are 100% het VPI Axanthic or not. This test can also check if your animal visual VPI Axanthic or not. This test cannot be used to check any other Axanthic lines (TSK, MJ,..)
The Desert ghost test checks whether your animals are 100% het Desert ghost or not. This test can also check if your animal visual Desert ghost or not.
The Puzzle test checks whether your animals are 100% het Puzzle or not. This test can also check if your animal visual Puzzle or not.
The Blue eyed leucistic (BEL) complex test is made up of several tests:
- Special
- Mojave
- Lesser/Butter
- Mystic/Phantom
- Russo
- Bamboo
The Sunset test checks whether your animals are 100% het Sunset or not. This test can also check if your animal visual Sunset or not.
The Spider complex test is made up of several tests:
- Spider
- Woma
- Chocolate
- Wookie
- Spotnose
- Champagne
- Bongo
We're still working on adding others like Cypress, Black head and Hidden gene woma.
We're happy to announce we can now also offer sex determination tests for colubrid snakes! More animals will be added soon, so keep an eye out for this space!

How do I test my shed?
Collect your shed
Collect a dry shed from the animal you want to test. The minimum needed is a shed the size of your hand palm. If it is a baby, collect the complete shed. This can be used to perform up to five tests. Gently try to remove as much substrate as possible, but it doesn’t matter if there is some substrate that sticks to the shed (e.g. some remaining cocos).
If the shed is not dry, you can dry it on a surface in your house (Do not dry it in the sun or the test will fail). If the shed was wet for too long, the test will not work. So always collect fresh sheds for the testing procedure. You do not need to collect additional sheds if you want to perform multiple tests on the same animal.
Classify and store
Fill in a paper containing:
Your name
Your email address
The snake’s ID (to identify the snake, can be a name or a number)
The morph
The tests you want to perform.
Only sheds containing this information will be tested! Place the test card, together with the shed, in a closed Ziploc bag and store it in a dry room at room temperature or in the freezer. Sheds stored in the freezer will be less likely to fail during a test. A dry shed can easily be stored for 3 months. If you wish to store the shed longer please put it in the freezer.
Send your shed
The Ziploc bag is now ready for delivery to ProHerper Labs. This can be done by handing over the shed at any Houten or Hamm show, or you can sent the bags to the following address via conventional mail: ProHerper Labs, Wijngaardstraat 27, 3290 Diest, Belgium. If the shed was stored in the freezer you do not need to keep it cold during transport.
